KALDBAK

Kaldbak Church

Just north of Torshavn is a fjord shooting in from the east, Kaldbaksfjørdur, and we drove along the north side of the fjord. The main objective was to see and photograph the church in Kaldbak, which is a typical church for the Faroe Islands with dark painted wooden walls (originally treated with tar to protect against the harsh conditions on the islands) and a turf roof. We were also blessed with a morning with partial cloud cover, where the sun broke through in the morning painting the clouds in pink and orange.

And the day before the Faroes have had quite some snow making the landscape very beautiful. The afternoon the day after a lot of the snow had already melted away, when I captured the image below here of the whole fjord.

We drove on a road hugging the fjord along its northern side. You may just be able to see the road in the photo above here. In the beginning of our journey we saw a little harbour where the fishing boats were tied up along the jetty. The warm Gulf Stream makes sure that the water is free from ice year around.

Along the road one waterfall after another came down from the mountain to our left, the water running under small bridges before running out into the fjord to our right. I captured one of those waterfalls, where the water flowed down in steps from the very top of the mountain down into the fjord.

And finally we arrived at the small village of Kaldbak with its beautiful church surrounded by a wall built of dry stones.
