Funningur is a village at the Funningfjørður. At the end of the fjord is the village with the same name, Funningfjørður, and at the beginning of the fjord the village of Elduvik is on the south side and Funningur is on the north side. Both Elduvik and Funningfjørður have been described in earlier posts. The first time I spotted Funningur was when I was up at the top of the mountain (Hvithamar; see future post) looking down at the village, and I had read about the attractive church. So we decided to pay the village a visit.

But it was the church that captured us. In classic Faroese style with tarred walls and a turf roof and lying just beside the fjord, with a little river on one side cascading down the hillside and dividing the church from the cemetery.
