At our tour around Brienzersee, we had lunch at Grandhotel Giessbach. It opened 150 years ago, in 1875 and quickly became a symbol of alpine elegance. It is situated at the famous Giessbach waterfalls, which of course was the reason for its location. A funicular connects it the Birenzer lake, 100 metres below.
And just above the hotel is the waterfall, plunging 400 metres from the top via different cascades to its end just at the hotel before the water takes its last tour down to Brienzersee below. We came here mainly to see and photograph the waterfalls cascading down the nearly vertical slopes of the mountain behind.
But we had also lunch at the hotel sitting outside on the terrace. On one side we had the waterfall taking giant steps down the mountain. On the other side was the turquoise Lake Brienz. And I had the further pleasure of sitting opposite my dear wife.
