GJÓGV

The little hamlet of Gjógv

Gjógv is the northernmost village on the island of Eysturoy. The village or hamlet has around 100 houses of which not all are inhabited. It is first mentioned in 1584, but has probably existed long before that.

It got its name from the sea gorge that runs for 200 metres from the sea into the village from northeast. At the village end of the gorge is a natural harbour, where you can enter a boat without problem. But storms can create a surge, so boats have to be hoisted or taken up on a slipway, to be protected during the winter storms.

The sides of the gorge are nearly vertical and made up of black basalt stone

The whole village is situated in a deep and narrow valley and through it runs a river with several rapids. When we were there, the snow has melted in the valley, but still covered part of the mountains behind us.
