River Usk starts its life on the slopes of the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons and finishes in Newport. The oldest bridge across the river may be in Llangynidr, northwest of Abergavenny and southeast of Brecon. It is a stone bridge with six spans and in total 69 metres long. It was built in the year 1700 and the right to collect tolls from those crossing the river extended into the 19th century. It is now Grade I listed.
The cutwaters continue up the parapet, so you could stand there when the horses and carriages (or now the cars) pass by. And I could position myself there for my photography without risking that the cars ran over my tripod.
