Mercado do Bolhāo, the historic market of Porto, was inaugurated in 1914. It sells meat, fish, fruit, flowers, vegetables and lots of other things. It went through a thorough restoration and reopened its doors again in 2022.
The original market dates all the way back to 1839, when the town bought the land where the market now stands and the first market was an open-air version. It was named Bolhāo after the small creek running through the square. But of that creek nothing could be seen now.
Tore and I went there one morning, and we also tasted some food at local booths and came back another time for a nice dinner in one of the restaurants. According to Tore, who knows ten times more than I do about food and food markets, it was the nicest food market he has ever seen. We loved the taste of the very fresh seafood and the local cheese.
