A winding road leading down to the village of Nordradalur. The island of Koltur underneath the sun breaking through the mountains.
After an introductory post of the Faroe Islands I will describe the three main islands starting with Streymoy, where the capital, Torshamn, is situated and a couple of views from the southwest side of the island. We visited the winding road leading down to the settlement of Nordradalur and were lucky to see the sun breaking through the clouds and warming us up and shining on the road. In the background one of the smaller islands, Koltur, can be seen. Koltur is now uninhabited, but in the 1840s more than 40 people lived there on two different settlements. Now, it is only inhabited by sheep. Strolling around the area we found several small waterfalls.
A little stream caught from two very different perspectives. The left image is looking back towards the mountain towering behind, whereas the right image is captured at the top waterfall of the left image looking out towards Koltur with the sun rays shining through the water cascades.
Another little fall finding its way down towards the sea. The very first photo in this post was captured just to the very top left in this image
Driving out from Torshavn one morning I saw the sun just rising above the horizon (at around 9 am). I stopped to capture the image and as I stood there a sheep walked just in front of me to look at the same view. I didn’t have time to adjust my camera, but just captured the moment (although the discerning viewer can look at the image and notice that the sheep isn’t really sharp, but it was a fun moment).
From Nordradalur Jennifer and I continued to another little village, Velbastadur, as the sun was setting. Velbastadur has more than 200 inhabitants and is growing, mainly due to its location not far from Torshavn, the capital. Directly outside is the island of Hestur and a little bit further north is Koltur that I also photographed in the previous images from Nordradalur. Hestur is still inhabited by around 20 people.
