The Golden Eagle

A golden eagle lands to taste the dead fox that was placed to bring the eagle close to the hide, where I was waiting to catch this beautiful bird of prey

After a few hours wait, photographing the smaller birds that were surrounding our hide, suddenly the golden eagle (“Kungsörn” for my Swedish friends) arrived to taste the fox that was placed among the snow to tempt the bird of prey.

To photograph a flying golden eagle is no mean feat and I am a real beginner, when it comes to bird photography. Most of my images were of the eagle munching the fox and the few photos I got of him flying, he was always leaving a treetop and flying away from me 🙁. I am sorry I couldn’t catch any breath-taking photos, but for me the whole experience was breath-taking. One of the photos from my previous post shows me in the hide and another gives a more wide angle view of the area around the hide.

The Golden Eagle has a wingspan of over 2 metres. It weighs between 3 to 6 kg (and the female is heavier than the male). It can fly at speeds of more than 125 km/h and diving it reaches speeds of 300 km/h. All of that I learnt downloading facts in the cottage Jennifer and I stayed in for a week in northeast Finland. They catch squirrels and arctic foxes, so the fox presented to them here must be very attractive. Andthey can lift a prey, foursomes their own weight.

Landing on a tree top
Contemplating life (captured with a 700 mm lens, so quite far away from us)
And flying off again
