Rua de S. João climbing up from the Cais da Ribeira

A warren of small alleyways and some larger streets takes you up from the quay at Ribeira through the old town of Porto climbing up on the steep banks or the Douro river. Surrounded by colourful houses painted in different pastel colours or covered in the typical Portuguese tiles we climbed up into the medieval Porto.

Tore and I stayed in a charming place that Tore had found on Airbnb. An old house, very narrow and on several floors situated on a steep lane and overlooking the river. The little lane was so small and unassuming that many of the Uber cars we ordered found it difficult to find the place. But it was only a short walk down to the quay or a tough, steep climb up towards the central parts of the city.

Further up from the our Airbnb was Igreja dos Clérigos. It is a baroque church, literally meaning “the Church of the Clergymen”. The monumental tower of the church, Torre dos Clérigos, is 75 metres high and a landmark of Porto dominating the city.
