PENEDA-GERÊS II

Câvado River

We continue with a second post from the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, where Tore and I spent a couple of days last October. The first image in the previous post was of the River Câvado and the first image in this post is from the same river, but a lot further upstream. The next images are from the same mountains and river.

As I photographed the nature some seemingly friendly cows approached us. Suddenly one of them concluded that I was an unknown species and better to attack than taking any risks. He came rushing up towards me in full speed. I took one look at the horns and decided to rush back as fast as I could into the car. We were close to the Spanish border, and maybe they were training for a serious bull fight in the arena?

My respect for the Spanish matadors increased after this meeting

Leaving the bulls behind we continued towards the Spanish border, but stopped to explore the remnants of a causeway that the Romans built nearly 2,000 years ago. The causeway went along the valley of the river Homen. It originally ran from the city of Braga in Portugal to Astorga in Spain, but now only parts of the road remain across the border.

Trees have had plenty of time to grow across the old Roman road
