Sakura

The Cherry Blossoms covering a walkway in central Tokyo

At the end of March I was going to Japan to meet business friends for a few days, but Jennifer discovered that it was just at the peak of the Sakura season in Tokyo, so she joined me and we extended our visit a few days. But the focus was after all on business, so I didn’t have the opportunity to spend lots of time planning locations and waiting for the right light. But Jennifer is good scout and she helped me find good locations.

We had visited Japan in November 2019, just before the outbreak of Covid, and were both of us delighted in the country. That time we spent three weeks there and we focused on the countryside in autumnal colours. See the photos from autumn in Japan here. Now we would see more of Tokyo in Sakura season, and we would also have time to visit Mount Fuji, which we hadn’t seen before (see future post).

And these are all the people gathered to take photos of the tree in the previous picture. Sakura is really something of nearly religious importance in the mindset of the Japanese. And look at how happy and respectful people are!

Large crowds of people walked along the streets covered in the cherry blossoms. On some parts they had to direct so people could only walk one way and had to take another path in order to return. I tried to capture both the mass of people and the mass of blossoms above them
