Ice

Skagsanden beach at sunrise with the water from the receding tide frozen over the sand beach

When we visited Lofoten it was lots of snow. But ice was more unusual to see. I collected a few photos that in my mind stand out. The first one, above here, is from Skagsanden Beach, very near Flakstad and its beautiful church that I have shown before. The sun has just risen enough to bathe the clouds and the mountain top to the left in a warm glow. Skagsanden is, as the name implies, a sandy and quite flat beach. The tide has withdrawn and left just a thin layer of water covering the beach. And during the night hours the water froze into a thin layer of ice reflecting the pink clouds above. The ice cracked with a sound like I was crushing glass, when I walked upon it. But I didn’t feel too guilty about it. The next high tide would melt the ice, until the cycle repeated itself.

The images below were captured along different roads in Lofoten. The sun would melt the snow on the mountain sides and when the water froze again it formed these wonderful icicles along the road side.

The final image is from a lake, Sørvågsvatnet, near the southwestern end of Moskenesøya. The wind had swept away all snow and laid bare the ice, except where the stone boulder and the telegraph poles kept a tiny amount of snow dust on the ice. The photo is totally devoid of any colours, all is like a black and white image. And so it was, when Jen and I walked along the lake too. And not just black and white, but a very limited amounts of tones, where the lake, the mountains and the sky melt together. Minimalism!
