DUCK RACE

Eardisland Duck Race

Every year in August Eardisland Village arranges a “duck race” with plastic ducks along the Mill Stream. The Mill Stream was once upon a time feeding the mills along that stream with its slow flowing water led from the River Arrow that runs beside it. But now, the mills are long gone and the stream is just an attractive feature in the village, and the setting for the race of the yellow ducks. Each duck has a number and you can buy lottery tickets with the numbers of all the ducks.

In a village of 500 people it seems like at least half the village attended the race. But I think it is mainly the food and drink stalls and the opportunity to meet up with your friends that attracts the crowd.

Spectators at the bridge
…and along the stream
The ducks are all lined up for the start of the race
And off they go!
It seemed the current was faster on the right side of the stream (looking downstream)
Waiting for the ducks to arrive at the goal
Pitching the winning duck
