The family (with Emily, my granddaughter, as a further addition) celebrated Jennifer’s birthday (which this year appeared on a Monday) by going to Carriages outside Hereford, where we had an al fresco lunch on Sunday. Their outside dining area was set beside a pond with a fountain in front of us. Mondays are not the best days for restaurant dining, so we moved part of the celebrations a day forward.

And at home in our heatwave on the 3rd of August, her actual birthday, Jennifer had made a Gazpacho Andaluz (cold tomato soup, with a wonderful array of condiments or other things to add both flavour, texture and substance to the soup (cucumber, tomato pieces, peppers, eggs, bacon and I have probably forgotten e few). And a bottle of rosé was perfect on such a hot day. Eric and Emily got some substitute for the gorgeous gazpacho, which the three of us that had the cold soup very much appreciated.
