Bonehill Rocks

Views from Bonehill Rocks towards the rising sun in mid January

Bonehill Rocks lie on a ridge running north to south. To the west is the valley of East Webburn River and on the western slopes of the valley Widecombe-in-the-Moor is situated. A road runs nearby the rocks, and they are easily accessible with just a short walk up to the tor.

Many people come here for bouldering or rock climbing as the granite outcrops are vertical and challenging. I came for the views and the photography on a morning with frost-bitten grass and far-reaching views.

Sunrise this morning in the beginning of January is to the southeast and I had open views from Hound Tor in the northeast to Top Tor in the southeast.

And in the other direction, lit by the rising sun was the frost covered valley of East Webburn River. I focused on Widecombe-in-the-Moor with its tall church tower, “the Cathedral-on-the-Moor”. You can see that the sun has just reached the church tower and the tombstones on the yard, but on this side of the picture the houses are in shadow and the grass is white by frost, whereas in the background the hill is warmed by the first sunrays of the day.

To help those of you that occasionally walk on Dartmoor, but don’t recognise all the tors from a distance (they look fairly similar from far away) I have at the end of my post included the sunrise image once again, but now with names of the different tors overlayed on the picture. I have photographed them all and published them on this website: Haytor with its very distinct form; Emsworthy Rocks, where I captured the sunset through a lonely hawthorn tree and where there is a gorgeous bluebell meadow below; Saddle Tor, where I happened to capture the morning sunrise as a couple (Michaela & David) got engaged at the top; Rippon Tor with its views of the sea to the east and finally Top Tor with Pil Tor just behind it.

The sunrise view with names of the different Tors inserted. Haytor is easy to recognise, but the others may be more difficult to identify
